Answering Your Catalog Questions

Given how many questions we’re getting about this year’s catalog, we’re dedicating one post to answering the most common ones including:

1) When will the catalog release (and how do I make sure I’m included in the private shopping event)?

2) Will we be introducing new Tree Peony Varieties this year?

3) Which hard-to-get herbaceous hybrids will we have in stock?

4) Will we be offering Kinkaku again?

5) Will we have “own-root” tree peonies again?

I’ve answered each of these questions in line below.

However, if you have catalog question I’ve not answered below, feel free to post your query in the comments or shoot me an email at info@lyndakerfarms.com

Catalog Timing

Our Catalog releases in the first half of July. While we’re targeting the first week of July, depending on flower timing and the volume of inventory, we may release as late as the 2nd week of July.

Seedlings

This year we’re excited to introduce three new Tree Peony varieties - Carl’s Calling, Ella’s Dream and Teddi’s Gift. All of these have been beautifully named by our readers and will be registered with the American Peony Society.

You can find out more about each variety by clicking on the pictures below.

We already have an eye toward which seedlings to introduce next and - thanks to our reader’s generous and creative suggestions - have started to name the most promising ones. Here are three we’re keeping a close eye on this year. If they perform well, we hope to introduce some or all in 2022 or 2023!

Thanks to all of you who gave us such creative, inspiring naming ideas!

Herbaceous Hybrid Availability

Sadly, in order to increase our stock, we won’t be offering these three lovely hybrids in 2021.

However, based on preliminary field inventory, we hope to offer limited amounts of these gems:

Kinkaku

In 2020, when we weren’t able to offer Kinkaku, we had many disappointed customers.

In 2021, we’re offering 1-year, own-root divisions of this lovely and popular tree peony.

Please be aware, Kinkaku’s flowers “nod” on the plant. While some flowers may present to the side or even slightly up, many will present pointing down.

While this trait makes Kinkaku ideal for a raised bed where flowers can be more easily viewed, it also means Kinkaku does not perform well as a cut flower.

Own root tree peonies

This year we are selling exclusively own-root tree peonies (no grafted stock). All plants sold will be 1 or 2 year divisions.

Based on trials we’ve run here on the farm, we are noticing that own-root divisions seem to recover more quickly from transplant than do grafted plants. We’re excited about these plants potential to thrive in your garden.

Some of the varieties we’ll be offering as own-root divisions are
